Night club
starts compulsory breath testing station
Le Puha night
club, in Auckland’s Panmure, has set up a compulsory breath
testing station for customers after gaining a reputation for
having the highest level of drunk drivers nationwide.
Drivers
are tested before entering the bar and rewarded for having a
reading of zero with a free non –alcoholic drink.
Security guards
confiscate any alcohol found in the car, but allow drivers
to retrieve it later.
Security guards
also check the cars for anything that can be used as a
weapon.
The Le Puha
management are not sure why their customers drink and drive but
know it happens at home before coming to the bar.
Customers pay
a six dollar cover charge to help cover the economic cost of the
testing.
The initiative
has already seen results with only eight people caught drunk
driving in the last three months, compared to 2008 where 88
people were caught over the year.
