A shooting at Downtown Norfolk's Granby
Theater has left the future of the club in limbo. As of 10:30
Wednesday night, the owners put the club up for sale.
It follows a shooting inside the club just
24 hours earlier. 23-year-old James Reid,III is charged with
shooting just after 1:00 Wednesday morning.
On Wednesday night, police and fire
inspectors returned to Granby Theater and sited the owner with
19 fire and life safety violations.
Wednesday's shooting prompted Vice-Mayor
Anthony Burfoot to threaten to put any nightclub that can't
control it's crowd out of business. At a news conference
Wednesday afternoon, Burfoot said he's concerned
black-on-black crime will set city race relations back.
"I have to call a spade a spade. The fact
is that the people who are shooting each other look like me
and something needs to be done about it."
Others disagreed with Burfoot.
"Regardless of color anybody comes in there
with a gun for any reason it's a problem," said Jason Dayton
of Norfolk.
Alcohol Beverage Control has also launched
it's own investigation. Many other restaurants along Granby
Street are meeting with their staffs to review their security
and serving rules in the wake of the shooting.
