Aces reinstate apologetic VanAsselberg

Alexandria Aces manager Ricky VanAsselberg’s eight-day suspension is over, and he spoke today as if he was chastened by the experience.Ricky VanAsselberg

United League Baseball announced today that VanAsselberg had been reinstated and can resume his duties as the head of Alexandria’s baseball operations. He was suspended April 3 after being arrested April 1 at an Alexandria nightclub and charged with resisting arrest and simple battery.

“I would like to apologize profusely to the citizens of Alexandria, the Alexandria Police Department and the nightclub management for my actions,” VanAsselberg said.

“As manager of the Aces, and as a father, I have come to realize the amount of love and trust placed in me by my children, the United League and by the loyal fans of the Aces. If I embarrassed anybody, I’m truly sorry.

“I also greatly appreciate all the support that the United League has shown throughout this ordeal.”

VanAsselberg has agreed to take anger-management classes and attend mandatory counseling sessions, Alexandria City Attorney Chuck Johnson said.

“We are extremely pleased with the outcome of the investigation and that we are able to reinstate Ricky today,” ULB President Craig Brasfield said. “Ricky has always been a fan favorite of the Aces, as a player and now as a field manager. We are welcoming him back into the fold with open arms and wish him the best of luck in 2007.”

VanAsselberg had an altercation with city police and security guards at G G’s Club on April 1. Alexandria police said they had to use a Taser gun to subdue him after he refused to leave the nightclub and punched a security guard.

Johnson said VanAsselberg agreed to enter the pre-trial intervention program, which is offered to about 99 percent of first-time offenders if their charges are misdemeanors.

It will be at least six months before the manager finishes the program, Johnson added.

If VanAsselberg stays out of trouble for a year following completion of the PTI program, the arrest can be expunged from his record.

The Aces, who won the UBL championship in 2006 under VanAsselberg, open the season May 8 at Laredo, Texas, and have their home opener May 15 against Laredo.
