One of Broome's
most popular nightspots says it has had positive results since
installing metal detectors at its entrance after a series of
violent incidents involving weapons.
The manager of
the Roebuck Bay Hotel Mike Windle says he has been shocked to
find patrons trying to enter the premises with knives,
scissors and even a machete.
Earlier this
year, the WA Nightclub Association said there was no need for
metal detectors after the Police Commissioner demanded clubs
be forced to install the devices.
But Mr Windle
says now that customers realise the detectors are in place
there have been few attempts to bring weapons into the club.
"Gosh, I'd hate
to find out what's out there, just finding out the little
things that we didn't know about," he said.
"I'd say my
message to the clubs in Perth or WA or anywhere would be to go
onto the metal detectors straightaway."
Sergeant Simon
Rimmer from Broome Police has welcomed the initiative saying
more clubs should take their own security measures to limit
violence.
"I think it's
something that's fairly unobtrusive and I'm not sure of the
costs that are involved," he said.
"I think a lot of
patrons will respond favourably to it, knowing there is a
venue that caters specifically to their safety.
"They may find
themselves with increased patronage, which obviously offsets
the costs of paying for these metal detectors."
