A
23-year-old Rock Hill woman was shot in the face on New Year's
Eve at a Chester nightclub, police said.
Jessica Ryan Jones
of 439 Fewell St. was shot at the 321 Sportsbar, said Sgt. James
Darby of the Chester County Sheriff's Office. No one else was
hurt.
Jones was flown to
Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where she was treated and
released.
The shooting comes three
days after a teen fired a .38-caliber revolver into a door at
Club Le'Brea, another Chester nightclub. A 19-year-old Chester
man was shot once in the head.
Five youths, including a
14-year-old, were taken into custody Saturday in the Club
Le'Brea shooting, which left Mario Hughes with a bullet lodged
near his temple.
Club Le'Brea and the 321
Sportsbar are known to officers who respond often to both clubs
for shootings and fights, Chester County Sheriff Robby Benson
said.
Authorities have not made
any arrests in the New Year's Eve case. However, police are
looking at a handful of suspects and may file charges before the
weekend, Darby said.
Around 11:30 p.m. on New
Year's Eve, police responded to Chester Regional Medical Center
for a shooting that happened at the 321 Sportsbar at 560
Columbia Road, Darby said.
"She stated that she had
just sat down on a couch at the bar when she was struck," Darby
said. "Somebody fired shots into the club."
It is unclear how many
people were in the club during the shooting, officials said.
Police recovered six bullet casings.
A familiar problem
Chester County authorities
have responded at least 14 times to the 321 Sportsbar for
shootings and fights, said Benson, who could not provide a
number of similar incidents at Club Le'Brea.
Police have not determined
a motive in either shooting, and neither incident is related,
Benson said.
Still, officials plan to
step up security for weekend club gatherings.
"We're going to do all we
can do, but we need help from the people who go to these clubs,"
Darby said. "They need to pick up the telephone and dial 911
when they know something like this is going to happen or a fight
is about to take place."
Instead, he said, police
do not receive much cooperation from potential witnesses.
"I'm not saying tell on
people, but we need help," Darby said. "We need people to come
forward and tell us what happened."
