A Topeka teenager
and two other people were hospitalized after a shooting outside
a nightclub in downtown Lawrence.
Police were called
to the scene at "Last Call," a nightclub on the 700 block of New
Hampshire Rd. Around 3 a.m., they found a group of people
outside the club, fighting.
Three people were
shot by a man who escaped in a dark-colored vehicle. The victims
included a 15-year-old Topeka boy, who was shot in the foot. The
other victims were two club employees. One was shot in the back,
the other, in the foot.
The shooting
happened after security officers escorted a club patron outside
the building due to unruly behavior. A crowd gathered on the
sidewalk as chaos erupted between the club employees, security
personnel, the man being removed, and associates of the man
being removed from the building.
The suspect fired
multiple shots toward the crowd of people from the driveway of
the city parking lot, just north of the club’s entrance. The
shooting suspect was described as a black male, approximately
5’7” tall, weighing between 140 to 150 pounds. He was possibly
wearing a black coat. After firing the shots, he fled north in a
dark-colored vehicle, driven by another person.
The Topeka boy
was transferred by ambulance to the Children’s Mercy Hospital in
Kansas City, while the other two victims went to Lawrence
Memorial Hospital and Kansas City Hospital.
Police will not
comment on the condition of the victims as they continue to
investigate the crime. The owner of the club has not answered
our phone calls.
