A nightclub doorman
is fighting to keep his sight today after he was glassed in the
face as he worked at a Billingham venue.
The 25-year-old
doorman was injured at Trader Jacks pub on Station Road just
before 11.30pm on Saturday.
He was taken to
James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough where he is
still receiving treatment to injuries to his face and eyes.
A Cleveland
Police spokeswoman said: “It is believed the man could lose his
sight.”
Police today
described his condition in hospital as “comfortable”.
A 25-year-old man
was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of wounding and has been
released on police bail pending further inquiries.
One drinker, who
was with friends in Trader Jacks on Saturday night, claimed an
altercation had broken out between staff and a group of men
shortly before the incident.
The man, who
asked not to be named, said shorty afterwards he was outside the
bar with friends “at which time we heard what sounded like a
window or something breaking”.
“I’ve spoken to
one of my friends who was still in the pub when the incident
happened and she said they were covered in glass and
everything,” he said.
“My heart does go
out to the doorman. Although not a close friend I did know him
and we have had some laughs with the guy over the months.”
Jason French,
company director of Trader Jacks, which also has bars in
Stockton and Middlesbrough, said: “As employers we are being
totally supportive to our member of staff, and we are helping
police with their inquiries.”
Trader Jacks in
Billingham opened in December 2006 after undergoing a £500,000
refurbishment. Previously Visions, the venue had stood empty for
two years.
Any witnesses to
the assault are asked to contact DC Dave Glass at Stockton CID
on 01642 302226.
