Chandigarh’s
brawny female bouncers ‘man’ nightclub
Two brawny women
have become bouncers at a nightclub here, muscling their way
into yet another male bastion.
A
rarity anywhere in the country in an all-male dominated
profession, the two female bouncers took up the profession a
couple of months back in the city.
Amandeep Kaur, 22, who hails from a village in Punjabs Barnala
district, 250 km from here, stands tall among her male
counterparts in Score nightclub in Chandigarhs Sector 8. She
became the first female bouncer of Chandigarh and its
neighbouring towns two months back.
When I expressed my desire of becoming a bouncer, everyone
laughed at me and discouraged me from following this career.
Even officials at Score were not ready to give me this job, an
excited Amandeep told IANS.
But when I smacked a boy who was creating a nuisance in the club
and threw him out, the management immediately recruited me, she
said. Now I am looking forward to build a team of female
bouncers from the city, she said.
Following in her footsteps, Manpreet Johal, 20, from the border
district of Gurdaspur in Punjab also joined Score. She has
become the second female bouncer of the city.
The idea of becoming a bouncer struck her two years back while
attending a party and she was preparing since then to become
one.
Whenever I go to some party, I wonder why there are no female
bouncers. Girls are usually not comfortable approaching male
bouncers in case of any trouble. So I decided to join this
profession, said Manpreet.
Manpreet is an athlete and a basketball player. She is now
learning martial arts and spends two hours in the gym everyday
to do weight training.
Their duty is to keep an eye on the female guests coming to the
nightclub and to remain vigilant at the entrance and near the
dance floor on four nights a week between 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.
They are also supposed to physically check every woman coming to
the club after instances of females sneaking in with drugs.
Manpreet admits that the career of a bouncer does not have a
long-term future. As a back up option I am pursuing a law degree
and aspire to join the Indian Police Service (IPS) after
clearing the civil services exam, she said.
She added: I eat a protein-rich diet and drink a lot of water to
keep myself fit. I am very strong both mentally and physically
and I think that there is nothing on this earth that girls can
not achieve.
Both women bouncers say that their job is quite demanding and at
times they have to handle unruly, drunk youths who create
problems in the club.
