She bounces off trouble at disc
Amandeep Kaur has created ripples in
the party circuit. No, she isn’t a model or an
actor, but standing tall at 5 feet 7 inches and
weighing 65 kg, she has opened up a whole new
career
option for women to follow by being city’s only
known bouncer.
With chiselled looks, this 22-year-old may seem
unlikely for the task at hand but apart from oozing
oodles of confidence, she sure knows her job well.
“Since childhood, I have wanted to do challenging
jobs that men do.
Having been treated like a son at home, I never
feared boys and always challenged them even while in
school and college,” said Amandeep whose love for
hockey and kabbadi helped build her stamina.
But becoming a bouncer was incidental. "My friends
and I were once teased by a guy and though I didn’t
let him get away with it, I realized that I needed
to be physically stronger," said Amandeep, recalling
entering Score, a discotheque, in Chandigarh after
the incident.
"There I was overpowered with the feeling of
teaching all eve-teasers a lesson so that they
wouldn’t ever dare pass lewd comments at women."
It wasn’t an easy decision, though. "I couldn’t find
a single woman bouncer and that reinforced my
decision to do the job," said Amandeep who now fends
off troublemakers at Score. Hoping that every woman
at the disc enjoys equally as her male counterpart
without feeling insecure, Amandeep said, "Girls
think my job is cool and they are happy to have me
around. They come to me saying that my presence
makes them feel secure."
She knows that to keep pace with a man's profession,
she has to be physically strong and, therefore,
never gives her gym sessions or martial arts
practice a miss.
