string of bashings
over 10 years has led to a fear that there may be a culture of
violent attacks in the Claremont area.
John (30) said this
week: "The latest attack last week reminded me again of the time
I nearly became a victim 10 years ago.
"There have been
so many random attacks on people who say they did not provoke
anybody. I wonder if it's some sort of weird blood sport.
"I was completely
sober and I dropped off some friends near Club Bay View and went
to park my car.
"I walked back to
the door - but the security guy wouldn't let me in because he
didn't like my shirt.
"I stood talking
to him as three guys came down the stairs and one of them
yelled: 'You're f****d mate! You're dead!'
"I didn't say
anything back or even look at them.
"The bouncer did
nothing. He appeared to know them.
"Luckily for me,
some other people came along just then, and while they were
milling around I sprinted for it.
"I ran along St
Quentin Avenue to Bay View Terrace, then down to the highway and
into the park.
"The three guys
were chasing me and yelling they were going to kill me.
"I was so
frightened. I thought I was gone.
"I managed to
lose them in the park among the shrubs and I escaped through a
side-street and went the long way around to get back to my car
and go home."
He said he never
reported the incident because he thought police would not have
anything to investigate.
