Around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, the Gregg County
Sheriff's Office says it responded to a shooting at the El Greco
Club located in the 1300 Block of Old Highway 31. That's just
east of Kilgore. Tarraina
Sheffield
Mumphrey, 30 of Mesquite was caught in the gunfire and killed.
The Sheriff's office says a man was thrown
out of the club Sunday morning, but later returned firing
several shots from the parking lot. Mumphrey, authorities
say was caught in the middle of it. According to witness
accounts to the police, the suspect took aim on a security guard
outside the front door. Mumphrey with no regard to her safety
stepped in between them. Mumphrey was rushed to a hospital, but
later died.
"She's not going to be here because some
other person decided to take somebody else's life," said area
neighbor Annie Jackson. Neighbors in the area see Mumphrey's
act as extraordinary.
"Well, it seems like that lady was a hero
and trying to keep down trouble and confusion," said area
resident Mike Cooks.
"This is a person that was probably trying
to do the right thing, to help someone else out and lost her
life," said Jackson. The suspect authorities fled the scene.
He's described as a black male, late 20's and around 290
pounds. He was wearing a white shirt with blue dots and jeans.
Why Mumphrey stepped in front of a gun we may never know, but
her courage has neighbors remembering her.
"Its always a sad thing when somebody
loses their life, and especially unexpected and needlessly like
that," said Cooks. Funeral arrangements are pending for
Mumphrey through Cunningham Funeral Home in Kilgore. Anyone
with information on the shooting suspect is asked to call the
Gregg County Sheriff's Office.
