Chris Dow said he
literally grew up in downtown Chico, and takes it somewhat
personally when people don't respect its unique charm.
He proved that
Sunday night while performing his duties as door security at
Madison Bear Garden on West Second Street.
Shortly after 11
p.m. Dow said he was outside the business talking with a female
employee when he noticed a man defacing the wall of a parking
lot across the street with spray paint.
Dow, 24, said he
ran up on the man and made it known in no uncertain terms how he
felt about graffiti.
"The guy freaked
out," Dow recalled, but ran west on Second Street in an attempt
to get away.
Dow caught up
with him on Salem Street and took him down to the ground.
"At that point, I
sat on him, called police, and waited for them to show up."
He said Chico
State University officers were the first to arrive, followed
closely by city cops.
Dow said he
suffered only minor cuts and scrapes from struggling with the
man on the sidewalk.
An investigation
showed that the suspect, identified as Luke Eugene Ricci, 24,
had also allegedly tagged a building housing Upper Crust Pizza,
as well as Moxies Cafe in the 100 block of Broadway, and a
building in the 200 block of West Second Street.
He was arrested
on suspicion of vandalism and booked into the Butte County Jail
in Oroville.
Ricci allegedly
used black spray paint, but a police report didn't describe the
nature of the taggings he left behind.
