Fight leads to arrest in Wolcott Bar bouncer tried to prohibit knife

A visitor from New Hampshire tried to attack a bouncer who told him he couldn't bring his knife into a bar, police said.

Joseph Barlow, 43, of 61 Burke St., Nashua, N.H., brought the knife into Johnny B's at 1457 Meriden Road Wednesday night, causing disruptions. When he returned Thursday night, the bouncer asked him to empty his pockets before entering.

The bouncer noticed Barlow was carrying the knife and told him to leave it at the door. Barlow said, "Why don't you take it from me," according to Police Capt. Domenic Angiolillo.

A verbal dispute ensued and Barlow called the bouncer, who is black, a racial slur, and pulled out the knife. Barlow chased the bouncer around the pool table of the bar, police said.

When the manager tried to intervene, Barlow punched him in the face. The manager tried to defend himself, resulting in a cut above Barlow's left eye.

Officer Frank Shippani was first to arrive at the scene. He captured Barlow, whose face was covered in blood, as he tried to escape from a side door.

"It was remarkable nobody was seriously injured," Angiolillo said.

Several other officers and a detective came to the bar and helped piece together the story. Barlow was charged with breach of peace, criminal attempt at assault, third-degree assault, possession of a controlled substance, carrying a dangerous weapon and second-degree threatening.

He was held at the police station Thursday on $25,000 bond and was arraigned at Waterbury Superior Court Friday morning.

Barlow has a record of more than 18 arrests, most of them violent crimes, Angiolillo said. He told police he was in Wolcott because he was visiting a woman at Carabelas Apartments in Waterbury.
