Charges over police scuffle

THREE St Albans men have been charged and two policemen taken to The Alfred hospital after a scuffle in front of 100 people waiting to enter a city nightclub.

Police spokeswoman Katherine Jess said the constables were on patrol in Little Bourke Street on Saturday night when someone in the queue directed insulting gestures and remarks at them about 11.30pm.

When the officers got out of their van, one man is said to have immediately become aggressive. When police went to arrest him, two other men are alleged to have intervened and assaulted the police.

Security guards from the King Street nightclub helped police restrain two men, while a third man fled. A man was later arrested nearby.

The men were then charged with affray, assaulting police and intentionally and recklessly cause injury. One, aged 24, was remanded to face Melbourne Magistrates Court today. The other two were released on bail.
