Patrons from a Prahran nightclub ran for cover after a gun was fired in the street early yesterday morning.

Police said an altercation broke out between a group of men inside The Love Machine in Little Chapel Street just before 3am.

"The men were ejected from the nightclub by security, but the scuffle continued out the front," a Victoria Police spokesman said.

"A gunshot was then heard in the street which sent patrons running for cover."

No one was injured and no property was damaged during the shooting.

Police said investigations are continuing.
