Jacks Nightclub on High Alert after 3 Arsons and a Shooting
-
- The
owners of Cactus Jacks on Lamar near Winchester are on
high alert. After three unsolved arsons and a deadly
shooting in the parking lot, one of the club's security
guards is now receiving death threats.
The
nightclub has been hit by arsonists three times in the
last two months. The most recent attack occured a week
ago on Sunday, March 8, 2009 when a flaming car went
through the front door, with a stick holding down the
gas pedal. Three employees made it out safely, thanks to
an ATM that stopped the car from crashing into the
office.
The damage from that fire was repaired in record time
and on Friday, March 13th, Cactus Jacks reopened. But
another tragedy soon followed that night.
A security guard working for a private company shot and
killed 36 year-old club patron Jason Morin.
Club manager Darren Grimes says Morin had been
performing donuts in the back parking lot. When security
asked him to stop, Grimes says Morin got out of his
truck, walked up to the security guard and grabbed his
gun. Grimes says the guard pulled out another gun and
shot Morin.
Memphis Police questioned the guard and released him. No
charges have been filed in the case.
Within hours of the shooting, the guard started
receiving death threats. The owner of the security
company that employs the guard, declined to give his
name to myEyewitnessNews.com, but does confirm the
threats and says he's afraid for his own safety, too.
Club manager Darren Grimes says the turbulent times are
having an impact on his business and the employees.
"We're trying to adapt to the last 35 days of violence
that have been directed towards us," says Grimes.
"Everyone is on edge."
The security company owner says, in fact, when his
guards saw Morin driving erratically near the club they
were worried someone was targeting it again.
"Immediately," says Grimes, "we thought it was another
attempt to get at the building."
Sunday night, less than 48 hours after the shooting,
customers lined up to get inside as security patrolled
the grounds. Club owners say the arsons started when
they began offering hip-hop nights on Sundays. They
believe a rival club, worried about them stealing
business away, is responsible for the arsons.
"I don't think they want to hurt anyone," says Grimes.
"They are just trying to prove a point. They want our
business but we are not going to give up."
Jason Morin's family members tell myEyewitnessNews.com
they are looking into their legal options following the
death of their loved one.
As for the arsons, the FBI is now involved and is
searching through the club's surveillance video. It
shows two men running from the car as it went through
the front entrance. So far, no arrests have been made in
connection to any of the fires.
