Nightclubber was second family death

THE family of a man killed outside a Frankston nightclub at the weekend was struggling to cope with the death of his brother just last year.

Frankston man Gerry Karamesinis, 30, died after he and a group of about five friends tried to enter the 21st Century nightclub about 11.30pm on Saturday.

Police said one of the group removed a bollard attached to a rope barring entry to the club and wielded it in a threatening manner.

After some pushing and shoving with two bouncers, Mr Karamesinis fell to the ground and hit his head.

He died on Sunday night in the Alfred Hospital.

Det-Sgt Paul Busuttil, of Frankston CIU, said Mr Karamesinis's death was a tragic accident and his family was distraught.

"Indications are they were refused entry for reasons other than intoxication," he said.

"(One of the group) removed one of the steel bollards from the ground . . . just after the bollard has been removed from the male he has been pushed and he's fallen to the ground."

Friends said Mr Karamesinis's brother had died in unusual circumstances last year, but they would not give details.

Det-Sgt Busuttil said police had spoken to everyone involved, and security staff had given a version of events consistent with CCTV footage from the Davey St club.

Police were last night still viewing material and interviewing witnesses.

They appealed for witnesses and anyone who was in line outside the nightclub at the time to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
