Police suspect gang fight behind downtown shootout

A shootout in Toronto's club district early Tuesday morning has police searching security cameras for Police Investigatingclues on the culprits.

About 30 shots rang out at around 3 a.m. on Adelaide Street outside the nightclub D.N.A. One gun has been recovered but police believe four gunmen were involved.

A number of cars, business, and even a nearby apartment residence has been hit. A man checked himself into a hospital for a minor gun wound but police believe he was an innocent bystander who got caught in the crossfire.

"Had this been a Friday or Saturday night, I wouldn't want to think of how many people would be in the hospital or dead because of this," said Det. Peter Karpow, speaking to CTV News.

Investigators believe a gang fight is to blame on the shootout.

It's not the first time police were called to the club. On Sunday, authorities arrested two patrons for carrying guns.

The club district has become a huge blight on the city, and it needs to be addressed soon, said Adam Vaughan, the city councillor representing the area.

Toronto Police"This is a residential community and people shouldn't wake up to the sound of gunfire, I don't care what neighbourhood it is," he said.

Traffic had to be rerouted Tuesday morning as police are expected to stay on the scene until early afternoon. Adelaide, from Peter to John Streets will remain closed while they conduct their investigation.

Investigators will review the police CCTV security cameras that monitor the area. One was installed on Peter Street, close to the fight but police believe construction scaffolding might have obstructed the view.

So far, detectives don't have a description of the suspects. They are asking anyone who was downtown around the time of the shooting to give police a call at (416) 808-7400. Callers can leave an anonymous tip at Crime Stoppers, (416) 222-TIPS.
