Victim kicked in street attack

A YOUNG man's night out with old mates in his home town has ended with him seriously injured in a sickening street attack.

Ben O'Toole is believed to have been kicked in the assault by three men in Moorabool St, Geelong.

Mr O'Toole will turn 22 today in the Alfred hospital after an exchange of words at 3am yesterday ended with him being knocked unconscious.

He did not wake up until last night and was listed as seriously ill.

Family friend and Herald Sun reporter Geoff Easdown said the incident happened after Mr O'Toole and a bouncer became involved in a verbal disagreement across Moorabool St.

The victim told his family he had been attacked by three men and kicked, he said.

Mr O'Toole's brother Mick said he would not have looked for trouble.

"He's a fun-loving kid. He's never been in trouble. I can't understand why anyone would want to hurt him," he said.

Ben O'Toole, who recently started work as a junior cameraman at Channel Nine, lost his father Peter in May.

His mother Sue, brother and two sisters were by his hospital bedside last night.
