- City
bouncer lands film role alongside Danny Dyer
- Big screen
stardom is beckoning again for a city doorman turned actor
after he landed a role in the new Norfolk-shot film starring
Danny Dyer.
Boxer
Earl Ling has been seen by millions on television when he
“wrestled” with Terry Wogan in an advert for Children In
Need, but nabbed a speaking part in the new film Malice In
Wonderland.
The film was shot in Yarmouth last summer and Mr Ling, 36,
plays a henchman of gangster Harry Hunt, played by Nathanial
Parker, better known as television detective Inspector
Lynley.
Mr Ling said: “I play a guy called Two Guns Tony. It's only
a small role but this time I've got a speaking part which
I'm quite pleased about.
“Obviously given my background I do tend to get typecast a
bit so I normally end up playing the gangster or tough guy
but I really enjoy it.”
Mr Ling's former occupation as a doorman came in handy for
one of the two scenes he shares with actor and TV presenter
Danny Dyer, who stars as Whitey. He has to throw the star of
Severance and Mean Machine out of a nightclub.
But Mr Ling, who is set to re-launch his boxing career at
the Norfolk Showground next month with a cruiserweight fight
against Dewsbury-based solicitor Zahid Kahut, got on better
with Dyer off screen.
-
- He said:
“He's just a down to earth lad. I spent a great deal of time
with him and went out drinking with him in Yarmouth last
August. I had to take a week off training after spending
three nights out with him…”
The film, which was backed by Screen East, is a modern day
take on Lewis Carroll's children's book Alice In Wonderland
and the plot deals with an American law student (played by
Lost star Maggie Grace) who is knocked down by a London
black cab and wakes up with amnesia in a seaside town.
Mr Ling got the part in the film, which was shot at a number
of locations around Yarmouth, thanks to his city-based
wrestling pals Ricky Knight and his son The Zebra Kid, who
were doing stuntwork in the film.
On the theme of wrestling, Mr Ling, who lives in Norwich,
was full of praise for the new film starring his boyhood
hero Mickey Rourke, who stars in the box office hit The
Wrestler.
He said: “That's an absolutely brilliant film. Mickey Rourke
is brilliant in it and he was my absolute hero when I was
younger. I used to spend about £100 a week on hair gel to
get the look he used to have. That might explain why I'm
bald now!”
Malice In Wonderland, directed by Simon Fellows, is due for
release later this year.
