Gun Related Incident at Cream Nightclub

Yvonne Harrop has lived in Forrest Estates for nearly 40 years. She lives next to club cream.

Yvonne Harrop, neighbor: “I have been awakened in the middle of the night with gun shots, and I don’t like that every much. I feel very uncomfortable.”

Richmond County deputies arrested Lonny Wright on Wednesday. They say he pointed a gun at people inside the club. Investigators say he tried to run, but they caught him, two blocks away. This gun incident is bringing back to light some violence at social clubs, within the past year. A man was shot to death on the dance floor at the Super C Restaurant, on Tobacco Road, and someone was killed outside Club Platinum on North Leg Road.

Yvonne Harrop: “It’s just a difficult situation. People wanna go out partying, but they don’t need to carry their guns.”

The owner of Cream talked to me over the phone. He tells me they have detailed security checks, which includes pat downs and metal detectors. He also says he’s hired four off-duty police officers and a total of 24 security guards in and out of the club.  He says this is just an isolated incident and wants patrons not to feel worried.  Commissioner Joe Bowles says the gun incident may cost the owner.

Joe Bowles, Augusta Commissioner: “A club owner is responsible for the patrons that come in not only when they are in the facility, but if they serve alcohol they are responsible for the activity that goes on in the parking lot.”

Wright was charged with Carrying a Weapon to a Public Gathering, Carrying a Concealed Weapon and Obstruction to an Officer…all these are misdemeanor charges.
